For all you who know the guitarist from the GSO here’s a little about their performance at Club Congress for the Club Fall Crawl event.
First of all let me start of by saying that I first saw GSO at their debut show with Brandon Stone their second guitarist who ended up leaving for Florida. He is now replaced by Johan Von on the guitar. He also sings some vocals. I have to say that his personality seems to mesh quite well with the bands style.
I’ve never heard the bands that reviewers have made comparisons too so I wasn’t really familiar with their style. Initially I was a little sceptical of the idea they had because it sounded just a little to fun. After seeing last weeks show I was pleasantly surprised. They have matured so much. The sound that was odd the first time around seems to fit quite well together now. I love their new songs. They still have the same style as their first go at things but it seems seems a little more rounded out and deliberate. We still hear strange synthesizer, measured simple guitar filling out sections, and bouncing drums. One of my pet peeves about local bands is that the rhythm sections are not always the most adept at being as tightly put together as they should be so it’s always nice to hear a very punchy and even sounding bass.
The larger dance floor that Club Congress has wasn’t full when they started playing but very quickly brought people close to the stage. It’s not bad when you have hot chicks and older people dancing at the same time enthusiastically to your music.
Anyway to wrap this up: I’m very happy that things seem to be working out for the GSO and I wish Nathan all the best. Damn, I should’ve bought a CD at the show!
